Paper Sculpture & Koji Nakamura

Born in 1958, at Kagawa prefecture in Shikoku.
He has worked for 8 years as a graphic designer in an advertising agency, but he started to become independent in1982.and started to focus and work on his original artwork, paper sculpture.

In nature, the sun will shine on Godﾕs creation, and shadow will appear. Life is similar to this cycle and there is light and darkness. Mr. Nakamura was fascinated by the deepness of light and shadowﾕ and started to pursuit its meaning, wanted to express its deepness through his own unique paper sculpture which is a transformation from 2 dimensional art to 3 dimensional art.

The reason that Mr. Nakamura uses white mermaid paper as his base in his work does not just mean its good paper quality. He also considers the white mermaid paper similar to the warmth of human flesh, cleanliness, peacefulness felt from its pure image, and comfort. Moreover, the color white reflects the individualﾕs heart at that moment.

The biggest reason that I was captivated by his artwork is not just his original, fantastic world composed by the white mermaid paper, but that his work has comforted peopleﾕs heart, and it has created a peaceful feeling.
